Why 'Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs'?

Backache is a very common problem and approximately 80% will experience back problems at some time during their life.   The 'Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs' programme has shown that participants will show an improvement in reducing back pain by up to 30% compared to those who are routed through the usual care offered by the NHS. It aims to gently and progressively get sufferers back to being more active again.

The successful research programme was run at The University of York (Department of Health Sciences) and it was of the largest research studies into yoga to date and was funded by Arthritis Research UK.  The research programme involved Teachers from the Iyengar Yoga Association (UK) and British Wheel of Yoga who ran specialist group classes in five areas of the UK for chronic back pain sufferers.

The positive results were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (the premier internal medicine journal, publishes research, reviews, guidelines, and commentary relevant to clinical practice) in 2011.  The Cost Evaluation in Spine Journal (the official journal of the North American Spine Society, is an international and multidisciplinary journal that publishes original, peer-reviewed articles on research and treatment related to the spine and spine care, including basic science and clinical investigations.) showed that this yoga would be cost-effective for the NHS.

Participants learn yoga for pain-relief, healing and improvement of their back health

for now and the future.

Aims are re-education and re-alignment of the body plus raised self-awareness.

Poses include standing, sitting, kneeling and lying down with stable comfort.
